El New York Times compra The Athletic para sumar 1,5 millones de suscriptores a su muro de pago

En busca de seguir diversificándose, The New York Times confirmó la compra del sitio deportivo The Athletic, que a fines de 2021 tenía 1.2 millones de suscriptores. El perímetro de productos de suscripción de The New York Times se ampliará próximamente con la adquisición de The Athletic, un medio deportivo de alcance local y nacional de EEUU con edición en Reino Unido que ha acumulado 1,2 millones de lectores de pago desde su lanzamiento en 2016. El diario neoyorkino pagará 550 millones de dólares por él, según ha adelantado The Information, y como parte del acuerdo mantendrá a los dos cofundadores en sus puestos cuando se cierre la operación.

Ambos llevaban meses buscando comprador para el proyecto debido a las pérdidas acumuladas en los últimos tres años, hasta 150 millones de dólares frente a ingresos de 138 millones. La pandemia en particular supuso un punto de inflexión problemático debido al parón de competiciones, que forzó ajustes salariales y despidos, pero incluso entonces The Athletic siguió sumando suscriptores y alcanzó el millón. Tiene además un negocio publicitario incipiente sobre todo centrado en sus podcast.

El medio nunca ha sido rentable, entre otras cosas por los costes de su nutrida plantilla de más de 600 personas. Si bien esperaba obtener beneficios por primera vez en 2023, la consejera delegada de The New York Times no cree que ese hito se produzca hasta más allá de 2024. Hasta la fecha había obtenido casi 140 millones de dólares en hasta ocho rondas de financiación, la última de las cuales se cerró en enero de 2020. En base a ella la valoración de The Athletic se situaba en unos 500 millones de dólares, pero sus cofundadores esperaban una valoración superior a los 750 millones cuando contrataron en septiembre de 2021 al banco de inversión LionTree para encontrar comprador.

Esta operación acercará de golpe al diario neoyorkino a su objetivo de 10 millones de suscriptores digitales para 2025.

Para entonces ya había establecido conversaciones con Axios y posteriormente con The New York Times, con quien paró la negociación en junio por desacuerdo en torno al precio y la compensación a los empleados con acciones en la empresa. Finalmente ambas partes han llegado a un acuerdo que proporcionará al diario neoyorkino un incremento considerable de suscriptores digitales de cara a su objetivo de alcanzar los 10 millones en 2025, además de un perfil promedio más joven.

A falta de conocer el nivel de solapamiento entre los lectores de pago de ambos medios, The New York Times declaró en sus últimos resultados que tenía 7,6 millones de suscriptores digitales y un total de 8,4 millones si se incluyen los de la edición impresa sobre un conjunto de más de 100 millones de usuarios registrados. Además del que da acceso al periódico, tiene esquemas de pago específicos para sus verticales de recetas (Cooking), pasatiempos (Games) y recomendación de productos (Wirecutter).

Todos ellos contribuyen con ingresos más estables que no dependen del ciclo informativo del momento que define la coyuntura política, algo que también se da en el caso de The Athletic. Sin ir más lejos, la ausencia de productos de ese tipo en The Washington Post en una etapa mucho menos convulsa que la protagonizada por Donald Trump explica en parte la preocupación por la caída de tráfico y suscriptores.

Además esta operación continúa el proceso de consolidación que se está dando en el mercado de nativos digitales de EEUU, en el que BuzzFeed renquea en bolsa a la espera de poder hacer adquisiciones estratégicas mientras Vox Media y Group Nine pactan su fusión por debajo de las cifras en las que llegaron a ser valorados.

The Athletic nunca fue rentable
The Athletic cuenta con más de 600 empleados, entre ellos 400 periodistas que les sirven para competir  contra gigantes como ESPN (Disney) y otras cabeceras deportivas internacionales.

The Athletic, un medio digital especializado en deportes y sólo accesible bajo suscripción, cuenta con 1,2 millones de abonados de pago y puede ayudar a The New York Times a cumplir con su meta de alcanzar los diez millones de suscriptores para 2025 (actualmente tiene algo más de ocho millones).

Puesto en marcha en 2016, el medio ofrece cobertura de numerosos deportes tanto a nivel nacional como local en Estados Unidos y cuenta además con una edición para el Reino Unido.

Con sede en San Francisco (EE.UU.), el proyecto se puso en marcha en 2016 y ha contado con importantes aportaciones de inversores, lo que le ha permitido reclutar a numerosos periodistas muy seguidos y expandir rápidamente su audiencia.

Pese a ello, The Athletic nunca ha sido rentable y no espera tener beneficios hasta 2023. En 2020, el medio recortó su plantilla como consecuencia de la pandemia de la covid-19, que paralizó temporalmente muchas competiciones deportivas.

New York--The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire The Athletic, the global digital subscription-based sports media business that provides national and local coverage of more than 200 clubs and teams in the U.S. and around the world, for an all cash purchase price of $550 million, subject to customary closing adjustments. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022.

The Times has been rapidly growing its consumer subscription business, doubling to over 8 million paid subscriptions across digital and print products in the last three years.

The Athletic is currently expected to be immediately accretive to The New York Times Company’s revenue growth rate. The Times Company expects the acquisition will be dilutive to The New York Times Company’s operating profit for approximately three years, as it scales subscriptions and builds an advertising business, and accretive thereafter.

The Athletic was founded in January 2016 by Alex Mather and Adam Hansmann, with the goal of providing smarter sports coverage for devoted fans through a subscription model. As of December 2021, the site had grown to 1.2 million subscribers.

Prior to founding The Athletic, Mr. Mather and Mr. Hansmann worked together at Strava, the fitness tracking app. They will stay on after the acquisition, Mr. Mather as The Athletic’s general manager and co-president and Mr. Hansmann as its chief operating officer and co-president. The Athletic will be a subsidiary of The Times Company and continue to operate separately. Mr. Mather and Mr. Hansmann will report to Times Company executive David Perpich. Mr. Perpich will be stepping into a new role as publisher of The Athletic. He has a long track record at The Times in helping scale subscription businesses, having played key leadership roles in the initial core product paywall, the creation and scaling of the Cooking and Games products, and the growth of Wirecutter once acquired by The New York Times Company.
